Sorcerer's tales second part:
Pop wooh

This is the second part of the traditional tales leave by our ancestors before the invasion of western European people and the lose of our first identity. The Maya World was more complex than it seems. We think all the cultures who flourish in south eastern Mexico, Guatemala and central America were all the same, but there is mayor differences between Cultures like «Palenque » or «Quichen Itza» or other mayor cultures from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.
Maybe the link between all these cultures was the influence of Olmec mother culture.
This Part is dedicated to the Sacred tales of the Maya Quiché the «Popol Vuh»I decide to work with this traditional tales because is one of the ancient works that came to us almost unmodified by Europeans.
A personal reason is that the Quiché Maya are from Toltec origin as revealed in the same book.
Finally because i believe there’s a unique tradition between the Quiché tradition and on of the center of Mexico. (one key came from Tikal and their Teotihuacan influence)The Popol vuh is a quite complex book. It contains many tales and put all of them into music, will be a titanic work, so i decide to put in music the most important characters of the tales and the key moments so they are in the same vain as the sorcerer’s tales.
It took me four years of research, creation of the musical instruments I found in clay and create the musical pieces with those instruments.
Many of those instruments I present here are never been used for musical purposes.(Mayan mono-cord, poly-spheric ocarinas from Guatemala, Mexico & El Salvador. )
All the instruments are functional replicas  of instruments that are confined in museums, or private collections or like the quadruple flute from Belize just been discover.
My deepest wish is to recreate with this melodies a forgotten and mysterious world now forgotten for western folk but alive in the hart of all my brothers of the Mayab.
Coyotzin

The world’s creation
“… everything was quiet, in silence, motionless and empty the wide heavens…”With these word start the sacred book, with these musical piece I try to give the atmosphere at the beginning of times.

Hunab ku
Hunab ku could be translated as “the only god” (hunab one ku god) the one, could not be represented with material matter because it is pure spirit. This is a high conceptual idea was present in Maya tradition many years before western monotheism.

The Ajaw’s awakening
Ajaw means the sun, the beginning of the earth and the sacred creation starts with the awakening of the sun.

1 Hun Rakan


From this word western thongs create the word hurricane, traditionally this word means the physical manifestation of the hart of heavens for the Maya quiche it was the thunder.

2 Tepeu Gucumatz

This words came from nahuatl and it means the highest (tepeu) and feathered serpent (Gucumatz) this is no one but the famous Quetzalcoatl from Toltec tradition he is one of the key of the big influence that exist between the cultures from central Mexico and the Maya from Guatemala.

Ixpiyacoc, Ixmucané
These are the names of the archetypal couple, this concept was also know in central Mexico as Oxomoco and Cipactonal (represented in the cover of the first part) this is also the link between the sorcerer’s tales first and second part.

4 Vucub-Caquix

This isone of the principal characters in the popol vuh it’s name means “seven macaw”But it has a more traditional meaning because all the tales in the book has a teaching Vucub Caquix represent the the sinful side in all human being.

Hunbatz y Hunchouén
Hunbatz y Hunchouén are the uncles of the magic twins « Hunapú and Ixbalamqué » they are the archetipal of the craftsman and the artist. This musical piece represents a magical song the twins play for their uncles and the magical song transforms them into monkeys.
5 Hunahpú e Ixbalamqué

They are the magic twins  they are with their parents Hun-Hunahpú and Vucub- Hunahpú the most important characters of the «popol vuh». When the fathers play to the ball they trigger the hate of the lords of the underworld and all the future saga of the magic twins


The divine twins plays the ball game
Hun-Hunahpú and Vucub- Hunahpú has been sacrified by the lords of the underworld so the ball game is lost. But the magic twins found the ball game artifacts used once by the fathers and they start playing the game right away.

The Twins journey to the underworld
So the lords of the underworld invite the magic twins to play the ball game into their realm. They want to sacrifice them as they did to their fathers, but the lords didn’t know that the magic twins got the powers from above as below, they are invincible.

6 The triumph of divine twins

And the magic twins wins and sacrifice the lords of the underworld. The lords must obey to the new rules that the twins impose to them, the most important is they will not disturb the people from the surface of the earth. After the triumph, the magical twins become the moon and the sun of the world.

Hun Nal Ye
Hun nal ye is the lord of corn or the spirit of corn, this is one of the oldest cereals of the world, and with agriculture the Mesoamerican man was able to create the wonderful civilization we know today. The base of this musical piece was created in 1994 and it was one of the first Coyotzin compositions.
